iPhone 18 Pro: Everything We Know So Far
Variable aperture cameras, a 2nm chip, satellite internet, and Dark Cherry — Apple's most ambitious Pro iPhone in years is taking shape

Apple's fall iPhone event is still four months away, but the rumor machine is already running at full speed. Between supply chain leakers, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, and a steady stream of prototype images surfacing out of China, the iPhone 18 Pro story is coming together faster than usual. What is emerging is one of the more compelling iPhone upgrade cycles in recent memory — a phone built around a genuinely new camera system, Apple's most powerful chip yet, and a new generation of connectivity that could quietly change how people think about being offline.
Here is a comprehensive look at everything we know so far.
Release Date and Launch Strategy
Apple is making a significant change to its iPhone release cycle in 2026, adopting a two-phase rollout. The iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the long-rumored foldable iPhone — currently referred to as the iPhone Ultra — will launch in September 2026. The more affordable iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and a second-generation iPhone Air will follow in spring 2027.
This is a notable strategic shift. For the first time, buyers who want a new iPhone in the fall window will have to choose a Pro model. Apple is essentially making September 2026 a premium-only event, concentrating its marketing firepower on its most profitable hardware. If you are waiting for the standard iPhone 18, you will be waiting until early next year.
Design: Refined, Not Reinvented
The iPhone 18 Pro is not a ground-up redesign. The overall proportions, the titanium frame, and the triple-lens camera plateau on the rear are all carrying over from the iPhone 17 Pro. But several targeted refinements add up to a phone that will look and feel noticeably different in hand.
The biggest visible change is to the Dynamic Island. Face ID components are moving under the display, enabling the smallest display cutout Apple has offered since the original notch era. One prominent leaker has described the cutout as approximately 35% narrower than on current devices.
The rear glass is also getting an overhaul. The two-tone look of the iPhone 17 Pro proved divisive. Apple is reportedly updating the process to minimise the color difference between glass and frame, resulting in a more seamless, unified appearance. Sizes remain unchanged: 6.3 inches for the Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max.
Colors: Dark Cherry Leads the Lineup
Every iPhone Pro generation gets a signature color, and 2026's appears to be one of the boldest Apple has attempted.
Multiple rumors confirm that the iPhone 18 Pro's signature color will be Dark Cherry — a deep red with a tinge of purple, replacing Cosmic Orange from the iPhone 17 Pro. The full lineup is expected to include Dark Cherry, Light Blue, Dark Gray, and Silver. Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue are expected to be discontinued.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported as far back as February that Apple was testing a deep red finish, and the Dark Cherry name was confirmed by a supply chain source in April. Notably, Apple will not offer a black iPhone 18 Pro — the second consecutive year without what was once considered the brand's most iconic color option.
The Camera: Apple's Biggest Upgrade in Years
Photography is where the iPhone 18 Pro makes its most ambitious statement. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has described the camera hardware upgrades as some of the biggest in the lineup's history — strong language for a reporter known for measured assessments.
The headline feature is variable aperture on the main 48MP Fusion camera. Apple has never implemented variable aperture on an iPhone. From the iPhone 14 Pro through the iPhone 17 Pro, the main camera has used a fixed f/1.78 aperture — the lens remains fully open at all times. A variable aperture lets the camera control how much light reaches the sensor: opening wider in low light and closing down in bright scenes to avoid overexposure.
More practically, variable aperture gives users real control over depth of field for the first time. Users can choose a shallow depth of field to isolate a subject, a medium depth to keep the background recognisable, or a deep depth to keep the entire frame sharp. This is a level of creative control that has previously required either a dedicated camera or painstaking post-processing.
Apple is also rumored to be introducing a wider aperture on the telephoto camera — addressing the longstanding weak point in iPhone zoom photography, which has historically struggled in low light relative to the main sensor.
There is also a potential supply chain story worth watching. Samsung is reportedly developing a new three-layer stacked image sensor that integrates three layers of circuitry to improve camera responsiveness, reduce noise, and increase dynamic range — developed specifically for Apple's 2026 iPhone lineup. Sony has historically been Apple's sole image sensor supplier, so Samsung's entry would represent a significant shift.
Display: LTPO+ and Brighter Panels
The iPhone 18 Pro display is expected to adopt LTPO+ technology — an upgraded version of the variable refresh rate panel in current Pro models. LTPO+ should enable more granular power management, contributing to better battery efficiency without sacrificing the 1Hz to 120Hz dynamic range. Rumors also point to substantially brighter peak brightness, though specific nit figures have not been confirmed.
The A20 Pro Chip: Apple's First 2nm Processor
The A20 Pro will be built on TSMC's first-generation 2nm fabrication process — a step down from the current 3nm standard used in the A19 Pro. The chip is also expected to use a packaging technique called Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module, which places the processor and memory on the same wafer rather than connecting them through separate components.
The A20 is expected to deliver approximately 15% faster performance generation over generation, with the efficiency gains from 2nm manufacturing contributing meaningfully to battery life. All iPhone 18 models are expected to come with 12GB of RAM — a meaningful bump that will directly benefit on-device AI processing and heavy multitasking.
Connectivity: The C2 Modem and Satellite Internet
The connectivity story for the iPhone 18 Pro is genuinely significant and has received less attention than it deserves.
Apple's custom C2 modem is expected to debut with the iPhone 18 Pro. The C2 is expected to be substantially more capable than both the C1 and C1X — potentially featuring mmWave 5G support and a performance level closer to the Qualcomm modems it replaces.
Most significantly, the C2 modem is expected to support full 5G satellite connectivity via NR-NTN — New Radio Non-Terrestrial Networks — allowing the iPhone 18 Pro to access the internet over satellite when no cellular or Wi-Fi network is available. Apple Maps and the Photos app are expected to work over satellite, and Apple is planning to allow third-party apps to access satellite connections as well.
Battery: Bigger Again
Leaks suggest the iPhone 18 Pro will include a battery of at least 5,000mAh — around 5,000mAh in models with a physical SIM card slot and 5,200mAh in eSIM-only configurations. The iPhone 17 Pro already topped a recent comparison of battery life across 35 smartphones. A larger cell combined with 2nm efficiency gains could push it significantly further.
The iPhone 18 Pro Max will reportedly be slightly thicker and heavier than its predecessor, almost certainly to accommodate the larger battery.
Camera Control Gets Simpler
Apple is expected to simplify the Camera Control button on the iPhone 18 Pro by removing touch sensitivity and haptic feedback. The redesigned button will retain only pressure sensitivity — a response to user feedback that the touch-sensitive gestures introduced on the iPhone 16 were too easy to trigger accidentally.
iOS 27 and the AI Camera Mode
Bloomberg has reported that the Camera app in iOS 27 is getting a new Siri mode offering visual intelligence features specifically designed to complement the camera hardware upgrades coming with the iPhone 18 Pro. The Siri camera mode is expected to replace the standalone Visual Intelligence experience, bringing it directly into the main camera view.
iOS 27 is also expected to bring AI-powered editing tools to the Photos app, including the ability to expand and reframe images, and a more conversational version of Siri with deeper integration across apps. Apple is partnering with Google to integrate a customised version of Gemini AI models to support the next phase of Siri's development. Apple is expected to preview these changes at WWDC 2026, scheduled for June 8 to 12.
Pricing: Will Apple Hold the Line?
The elephant in the room for the iPhone 18 Pro launch is pricing. The smartphone industry is navigating a memory cost crisis driven by AI-related DRAM and NAND flash demand, and most Android manufacturers have already passed those costs on to consumers.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes Apple will absorb the added memory costs rather than raising prices, in order to protect market share. The iPhone 17 Pro currently starts at $1,099 and the iPhone 17 Pro Max at $1,199. If Kuo is right, those prices hold. If he is wrong, the iPhone 18 Pro generation could represent the first price increase since the iPhone 14 Pro era.
Should You Wait?
If you are on an iPhone 15 Pro or older, the iPhone 18 Pro is shaping up to be one of the stronger upgrade arguments Apple has made in several cycles. Variable aperture alone represents a meaningful philosophical shift in how Apple approaches mobile photography. Paired with a faster, more efficient chip, a longer-lasting battery, and full satellite internet connectivity, the value proposition is genuine.
If you are on an iPhone 16 Pro or 17 Pro, the calculus is closer. The core experience will not feel dramatically different, and the camera upgrade — while real — is incremental rather than transformational for users already happy with their current results.
“We will know significantly more after WWDC in June. Until then, the iPhone 18 Pro is shaping up as the most interesting Pro iPhone since the camera-focused iPhone 15 Pro — and possibly since the introduction of the Pro line itself.”
